‘WRONG WAY: The Impact of FMCSA’s Hours of Service Regulation on Small Businesses.’

On Thursday, November 21, the House Small Business Committee’s Contracting and Workforce Subcommittee held a hearing on the current hours of service rules, entitled ‘WRONG WAY: The Impact of FMCSA’s Hours of Service Regulation on Small Businesses.’

I have read a lot about the HOS limitations over the past 12 years or so. I try hard to understand the science and the politics and the “calculus of death” – among other types of calculus, that goes into new safety rules.
And, it took me a couple weeks to get around to giving each of these 4 statements a good read – which I wanted to do before I made a public statement of my opinion on the issue. (Unlike certain groups who seem to have gotten into the habit of ‘sign-first, read-later’ voting on HUGE issues that impact all our lives.)
So here is what I see. . . The ATA has told us what their FEELINGs are regarding recent adjustments to the HOS rules. The OOIDA has weighed in also, telling us about their FEELINGs. And, the freight brokers have likewise told us how they FEEL about it. Seems they all vote for scheduling flexibility at the expense of a few lives of strangers. Then, there is this engineer who tells us what the SCIENCE behind all the HOS rules and recent changes are. There is only one person here who is relating facts and talking about science.
Low information voters are usually more concerned with feelings than facts. So far, the courts have looked at the science and said “The agency is doing it’s job.” . . . I wonder how much longer it will be before public opinion, swayed by those with an axe to grind, will effectively over-rule the scientific decision-making the agency is known for?
